NSO says correct 1996 deficit was given in 2002
NSO issued on the same day of Dr Gonzi's speech, in which it pointed out that the Lm188 million deficit figure had been given in error in a 2004 news release. According to the NSO, the net expenditure in 1996 was not Lm656.860 million, as portrayed in 2004, but should have read Lm570.661 million. Therefore, the fiscal deficit for the same year was not Lm188.589 million but actually Lm102.390 million. The MLP is still accusing the Prime Minister of using wrong data to portray it in a bad light, saying it was unbelievable how the NSO had issued a correction "more than two years late" and "exactly at the time when Dr Gonzi was delivering his speech in Parliament". The NSO data had brought to light the Nationalist Party's fabrications about the government's finances between 1996 and 1998, exposing the financial disaster the PN government had tried to keep under wraps, the MLP said.
