Microsoft polishes Office Live offering

Office Live, which is a set of small business services such as email, web hosting and contact-management software rather than an online version of Office, has a few new tricks and is heading out of beta.

Microsoft says it's not opposed to the idea of expanding into online document creation but that's not what small businesses are asking for, according to Marja Koopmans, the software company's director of channel and business strategy for Office Live.

She said: "They are saying 'I'm not looking to replace my desktop." Businesses are more interested in software to close sales and add online marketing. "That's really what we are focusing on with Office Live. We don't rule out anything for the future," she added.

The company has been exploring the idea of online or ad-supported versions of its core word processing and spreadsheet programs, largely within its Works unit.

Yahoo! Web Hosting Services Revised

October 18, 2006 - (HOSTSEARCH.COM) - Recognizing the growing potential of web hosting and ecommerce solutions for small and medium sized businesses, Yahoo Small Business (http://smallbusiness.yahoo.com) has initiated a major upgrade focusing on establishing immediate sales results for merchants. The companys Yahoo Merchant Solutions ecommerce platform has received the first of a number of planned upgrades which will make it easier to establish web stores on the Internet.

In a discussion with E-Commerce Times, Director of E-Commerce Products at Yahoo Small Business was quoted as saying, The changes come from a new focus on getting merchants up and running faster. The catch phrase for the upgrades is results in 30 days. A lot of work has been done to make the process of getting started easier, but a lot of merchants still spend too long up front designing their sites and loading products and that delays them reaching their real goal, which is to start generating sales and getting the money flowing."

According to the company Yahoo caters to around 40,000 merchants and about 1 million sites use Yahoo's hosting and web design services.

November 2006 Web Server Survey

There are now more than 100 million web sites on the Internet, which gained 3.5 million sites last month to continue the dynamic growth seen throughout 2006. In the November 2006 survey we received responses from 101,435,253 sites, up from 97.9 million sites last month.

The 100 million site milestone caps an extraordinary year in which the Internet has already added 27.4 million sites, easily topping the previous full-year growth record of 17 million from 2005. The Internet has doubled in size since May 2004, when the survey hit 50 million.

Blogs and small business web sites have driven the explosive growth this year, with huge increases at free blogging services at Google and Microsoft. Domain industry juggernauts Go Daddy (U.S.) and 1&1 Internet (Germany) have also seen strong demand for low-priced domain names and shared hosting accounts.

Microsoft to ship Office Live November 15

Microsoft has been beta-testing both Windows Live and Office Live ever since they were first announced last November. Now, a year later, Microsoft is saying that they will release the final version of Office Live on November 15.

Office Live is a bit of a misnomer—it is not a replacement for Office, but rather a set of web hosting tools provided by Microsoft for small businesses. It offers domain, e-mail, and web site hosting, as well as tools for document collaboration and customer relations management (CRM).

Office Live has been free for the duration of the beta period, but will cost $39.95 per month for the premium version following release. That gets you 2GB of online storage and 20 workspace users. There will also be a free, ad-supported, stripped-down version called Office Live Basics, and a lower-cost version called Office Live Essentials (10 workspace users and 1GB of storage) which will cost $19.95 per month.
