Boost business with a Web site

Do you think that only big business benefits from having a Web site? Well, a Web site can also boost a service-oriented small business' bottom line.

I recently received e-mail from an upholsterer. He owns a small shop in New York. His two questions about getting his business on the Internet cover basic issues.

1. How do I make a site? You can do the design work and coding yourself. You can work off of templates. Or, you can hire someone.

You'll need an attractive home page with simple navigation. Basic information should be posted online, such as services offered and pricing. Let customers complete forms to request more information. Think of your customers' most common questions. Try to answer them.

Microsoft (www.officelive.com), AOL (http://smallbusiness.aol.com/products), Yahoo (http://smallbusiness.yahoo.com/webhosting) and others offer packages for small businesses.

Yahoo! Web Hosting Services Revised

October 18, 2006 - (HOSTSEARCH.COM) - Recognizing the growing potential of web hosting and ecommerce solutions for small and medium sized businesses, Yahoo Small Business (http://smallbusiness.yahoo.com) has initiated a major upgrade focusing on establishing immediate sales results for merchants. The companys Yahoo Merchant Solutions ecommerce platform has received the first of a number of planned upgrades which will make it easier to establish web stores on the Internet.

In a discussion with E-Commerce Times, Director of E-Commerce Products at Yahoo Small Business was quoted as saying, The changes come from a new focus on getting merchants up and running faster. The catch phrase for the upgrades is results in 30 days. A lot of work has been done to make the process of getting started easier, but a lot of merchants still spend too long up front designing their sites and loading products and that delays them reaching their real goal, which is to start generating sales and getting the money flowing."

According to the company Yahoo caters to around 40,000 merchants and about 1 million sites use Yahoo's hosting and web design services.

"For decades, you've seen League members registering voters at your grocery store, hosting debates and candidate forums in libraries or TV stations, and rolling up their sleeves to make sure all voters are equipped with the information they'll need on Election Day," said national League president Mary G. Wilson. "We have a reputation for providing quality, comprehensive and unbiased information to voters, and now we're bringing that expertise online."

"Knowing where to go to vote is among the most sought after pieces of information in the days immediately leading up to, and on, Election Day," Wilson said.

Web 2.0 hype: Popularity without profits

Before YouTube joined the Google family, "Chad and Steve" claimed "people watch more than 100 million videos on the site daily."

MySpace, as a member of the News Corp. family, claims Tom has more than 100 million friends at the site.

"Old" stalwart Yahoo still clings to its homepage claim of "the most visited page on the web," while adding a new "largest community in social media" claim of 100 million users through Flickr, Yahoo Answers…

YouTube founders negotiated a $1.65 billion stock acquisition by $143 billion market cap Google, MySpace founders sold-out to $57 billion in assets News Corp. for $580 million and Yahoo is a $36 billion market cap company.

IS EVERYONE A WINNER?

The millions of individuals taking advantage of the content, application and hosting largesse of YouTube, MySpace and Yahoo win, as do the four young founders of YouTube and MySpace.

Hosting Zoom Introduces Clustered Failover Hosting

Hosting Zoom, a provider of business-class shared, reseller and dedicated web hosting, today announced it is offering clustered cPanel failover hosting with real-time data replication.

Company profile: Bay Hosting expands its service portfolio

When Bay Hosting started out as an internet services company two years ago, its founders fully expected demand for its secure hosting services to outstrip that for their consultancy.

Between them, Richard Jones and Geraint Edwards share a broad range of complementary skills at all levels of IT management, and found that once clients had tapped into their 20+ years of experience, it wasn't long before they came back for more, enabling the company to devote additional resources to the consultancy and troubleshooting side of the business.

Jones says: "This works for our customers, who will generally use Bay Hosting as their outsourced IT department, or as experts to call on when their in-house IT staff come up against a seemingly insurmountable problem."

"We gain repeat business because clients like the way we work," says Edwards.
